About TASK

The TASK concept, developed by New York based artist Oliver Herring, is an inviting and interactive experience. The events of TASK move attendees through a free flowing transformation from viewer to participant and back again.

TASK involves a host of elements, but the most important: a bucket. The TASK Bucket, in accordance with a few ground rules, transforms a crowd of strangers with a motley pile of paper, aluminum foil, shrink wrap, etc., and turns them into best friends with hats.

TASK events have taken place at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the University of Maryland. Further confirmed TASK events scheduled for 2008 will take place in Toronto (RegentTASK); The Seattle Public Library in Seattle; San Francisco; and, of course, Philadelphia (FluxTASK 2).

The History of FluxTask

The first FluxTask took place on December 15, 2007, in the FLUXspace Gallery and Art Making Machine Studios. The gallery housed two videos made by Oliver Herring, Howard St. (Airborn) and Waterloo St. The videos featured neighborhood kids and FLUXspace staff performing acrobatic stunts and imaginative gestures. The videos were projected on the exterior of the FLUXspace/AMMS building for the public to watch nightly.

To celebrate the premiere of the videos, FLUXspace joined together with Herring to bring the FluxTask event to life. Over 400 people showed up, despite a winter storm. Strangers quickly turned friends, people danced in a blue screen stage with a live video projected, and, as the result of a task taken from the bucket, all 400 people joined hands in a round of Ring Around the Posies.

The event quickly turned legendary, and those who missed it were left wishing they had made it. Hence, FluxTask 2 will take place on September 6, 2008, during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. The night promises construction paper, popsicle sticks, shrink wrap, and complete and utter fun. For more information on FluxTask 2, click here.
